Flooding Causes Most Severe Damage to Florida Homes
Most of the damage done to Florida homes this hurricane season was caused by flooding. Some Floridians only saw minor flooding, which brought the quick rise and recession of water and little damage to their houses’ foundations. Other owners of Florida homes weren’t so lucky.
Severe flooding “attacks and compromises the integrity of every part” of Florida homes. “Wood foundation pilings, structural beams, carpets, wood floors, cabinetry, mechanical systems, utilities and wallboard” can all be completely ruined once there is flooding above the first four feet of the first floor of Florida homes.
The greatest concern is structural damage, as foundation pilings “can be compromised by weakened soil,” and the constant pressure applied by mud and water against foundation side walls can also weaken structure.
