Activists Demand More Parking for Florida Condos
The Florida condo boom is crowding already packed neighborhoods, yet little effort is being made to increase the amount of parking for the influx of drivers.
Florida condos converted from older buildings may come with only one spot and in some cases no spots at all. However, even Florida condos “that come with two spaces may not have adequate guest parking for visitors -- or a third driver in the family.”
While some developers and city planners are designing creative new ideas to deal with the parking crunch, such as “installing special mechanical lifts that will allow buyers to suspend a second car over their space,” others hope that building Florida condos above shops and offices will curb Americans´ reliance on cars, “as they´ll be able to walk to shopping and maybe even to work.”
Yet only 8 percent of American households don´t have cars, and many neighborhood activists scoff at the idea of a carless society. They believe that the only way Florida communities can absorb more growth is by increasing the number of parking spaces
