Florida Housing Construction Expected to Slow as Supplies Become Scarce
Anyone having Florida housing built over the next few months may find that it will take more time and money to complete a home than first expected. The rebuilding of the Gulf Coast is expected to create a massive shortage in construction materials and skilled laborers.
Not only will homes currently under construction be affected, but Florida housing starts “could decline dramatically.”
Florida housing supplies soon expectecd to in high demand are insulation, PVC pipe, roofing shingles and diesel fuel. “Concrete, already in short supply because of the building boom in China and other factors, now sells for $80 to $105 a cubic yard, which is up 20 percent over the pat 18 months.” Builders expect the cost of concrete to increase by $5 to $8 in January, and they also fear lumber prices will increase by 10 to 16 percent.
Florida housing builders “are starting to stockpile drywall and roofing materials even if they won´t need those for weeks or months.” Once builders start paying more for materials, the end user is the one that will get saddled with the bill.
